Data Sources

Our safety ratings and regulatory information come from official government and international sources:

  • EFSA (EU) -- European Food Safety Authority: E-number approvals, safety re-evaluations under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008

How We Rate Safety

Each additive receives a safety rating (Safe, Caution, or Avoid) based on the consensus of regulatory agencies, whether it is banned in any major market, the level of scientific controversy, and the findings of peer-reviewed research. Our ratings are meant to be informative, not prescriptive.
