About AdditiveChecker
AdditiveChecker is a free food additive safety database that helps consumers make informed choices about the ingredients in their food. We compile regulatory data from the world's leading food safety authorities to provide clear, accurate information about food additives and E-numbers.
Our Mission
We believe everyone deserves to know what is in their food. Our goal is to make complex regulatory information accessible and easy to understand, so you can make healthier food choices for yourself and your family.
Data Sources
Our safety ratings and regulatory information come from official government and international sources:
- FDA (US) -- Food and Drug Administration: GRAS list, EAFUS database, food additive regulations
- EFSA (EU) -- European Food Safety Authority: E-number approvals, safety re-evaluations under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008
- WHO JECFA -- Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives: international safety evaluations and ADI values
- UK FSA -- Food Standards Agency: UK-specific approvals and restrictions post-Brexit
- MHLW (Japan) -- Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare: Japanese food additive regulations
How We Rate Safety
Each additive receives a safety rating (Safe, Caution, or Avoid) based on the consensus of regulatory agencies, whether it is banned in any major market, the level of scientific controversy, and the findings of peer-reviewed research. Our ratings are meant to be informative, not prescriptive.
